Yerba mate(Ilex paraguarensis) is a tea from South America, Argentina, Southern Brazil area. It has been consumed by the residents of these countries for centuries.
The Guaranir Indians called this the “Drink of the Gods” because of the health benefits they felt after drinking the mate.
In 1964 The Pasteur Institute did a study on the properties of Yerba Mate. Their conclusion was “it is difficult to find a plant in any area of the world equal to Mate in nutritional value. It has most all of the vitamins necessary to sustain life." That is one powerful plant!!
Yerba Mate also contains a xanthine alkaloid called Mateine. Mateine acts like caffeine but doesn’t have the side effect of caffeine. It will stimulate the mind, ease depressive moods and increase concentration. It will not interfere with sleep like a cup of coffee would.
