Hibiscus Tea

(Hibiscus sabdariffa)

Few herbal teas make an entrance quite like hibiscus. The moment dried hibiscus calyces meet hot water, the cup transforms into a deep, jewel-toned ruby — one of the most visually stunning brews in the herbal tea world. Hibiscus sabdariffa, known as Roselle, Flor de Jamaica, Bissap, and Karkadé across the cultures that have celebrated it for centuries, produces a tea that is as bold in flavor as it is in color: intensely tart, cranberry-like, and deeply refreshing — equally magnificent served steaming hot or poured over ice on a summer afternoon.

Our Hibiscus Tea is made from fine whole flower calyces — the fleshy, crimson cup-shaped structures that surround the hibiscus flower — sourced for their vibrant color, full flavor, and rich phytochemical content. At approximately 140 cups per pound, this is one of the best values in our entire tea collection. Naturally caffeine-free.

Hibiscus sabdariffa calyces contain a well-documented phytochemical profile including anthocyanins (primarily delphinidin-3-sambubioside and cyanidin-3-sambubioside — responsible for the tea’s characteristic deep ruby color), hibiscus acid (a unique dihydroxycitric acid lactone found almost exclusively in Hibiscus sabdariffa), citric acid, malic acid, tartaric acid, protocatechuic acid, quercetin, luteolin, kaempferol, gossypetin, sabdaretin, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, hydroxycitric acid, polysaccharides (including hibiscus pectin), vitamin C (one of the highest concentrations of any commonly consumed herbal tea), calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, and beta-carotene. Available in 4 oz, 8 oz, and 16 oz.

How to Brew

Hot Tea: Steep 1–2 teaspoons of hibiscus flowers in 8 oz of hot water for 5–10 minutes. Sweeten with honey, agave, or sugar to balance the natural tartness — hibiscus blooms beautifully with a touch of sweetness. Iced Tea: Brew a strong concentrate (2–3 tablespoons per 2 cups of water), sweeten while hot, then pour over ice. The color is spectacular. Agua de Jamaica: The classic Mexican preparation — simmer ½ cup of hibiscus in 4 cups of water for 10 minutes, strain, sweeten generously, and serve over ice. Blended Teas: Pairs beautifully with rose hips, lemon peel, ginger, and mint for custom herbal blends.

Available in 4 oz, 8 oz, and 16 oz.
