Hawthorn Berries

(Crataegus monogyna / Crataegus laevigata)

Hawthorn is one of the most deeply rooted plants in European botanical and cultural tradition — a thorny, deciduous shrub or small tree of the rose family (Rosaceae) that has been woven into the folklore, hedgerows, and herbal practice of Europe for thousands of years. Crataegus species are native across the temperate regions of Europe, Asia, and North America, and the dense, thorny hawthorn hedge has been a defining feature of the British and Irish countryside since the Bronze Age, planted as livestock barriers and boundary markers for millennia.

In Celtic and European folklore, hawthorn held a place of profound spiritual significance — it was considered a fairy tree in Irish tradition, and cutting one down was believed to bring misfortune. The tree blooms in May with clusters of white or pink flowers (giving rise to its common name “May tree” or “May blossom”), followed in autumn by the deep red berries known as haws. The berries, leaves, and flowers of hawthorn have all been used in European herbal tradition for centuries, and hawthorn is one of the most extensively researched botanicals in European phytomedicine, listed in the German Commission E monographs. The berries are rich in oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), flavonoids (vitexin, quercetin, hyperoside), triterpene acids, and tannins. Our Hawthorn Berries are available in both Whole and Powder forms.

Capsules: Fill empty capsules with hawthorn powder for a convenient supplement form. Culinary: Hawthorn berries have a long history of culinary use in Europe — traditionally made into jams, jellies, fruit leathers, and syrups. The flavor is mildly tart and apple-like, reflecting the plant’s membership in the rose family.
