Horny Goat Weed Powder

(Epimedium grandiflorum)

Few herbs have a common name as memorable as Horny Goat Weed — and the story behind it is equally unforgettable. According to Chinese legend, a goat herder in ancient China noticed that his goats became unusually frisky after grazing on a particular leafy plant in the mountains. The observation was recorded, the plant was investigated, and Epimedium entered the Chinese herbal canon — where it has remained for over 2,000 years under its classical Chinese name Yin Yang Huo (淫羊藿), which translates roughly as “licentious goat herb.” Whether the legend is apocryphal or not, Epimedium is one of the most extensively studied botanicals in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and modern phytochemical research alike.

Epimedium grandiflorum is a graceful, shade-loving perennial of the barberry family (Berberidaceae) native to the mountain forests of China, Japan, and Korea, prized in gardens for its delicate, spurred flowers and attractive foliage. The leaves are the primary part used in herbal practice and contain a rich array of phytochemicals, most notably icariin — a prenylated flavonol glycoside that is the most studied active compound in Epimedium and the subject of extensive modern research — along with epimedin A, B, and C, baohuoside, quercetin, kaempferol, and polysaccharides. Our Horny Goat Weed is available as a finely milled Leaf Powder.
