Description
Horse Chestnut
(Aesculus hippocastanum)
Horse Chestnut is a majestic, large-canopied deciduous tree native to the mountain forests of the Balkans and southeastern Europe, now widely planted as an ornamental throughout the temperate world for its spectacular spring flower spikes and distinctive spiny-husked fruits. Aesculus hippocastanum has been a fixture of European parks, avenues, and gardens for centuries — and a fixture of European herbal practice for nearly as long. The seeds (chestnuts), bark, leaves, and flowers have all been used in traditional European herbalism, with the seeds being the primary part used in modern botanical preparations.
The horse chestnut seed is one of the most extensively researched botanicals in European phytomedicine, listed in the German Commission E monographs as an approved botanical. Its most studied active compound is aescin (also spelled escin) — a complex mixture of triterpenoid saponins that gives horse chestnut its characteristic bitter taste and is the subject of a substantial body of European clinical research. The seeds also contain flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol, rutin), tannins (aesculitannin), coumarins (aesculin, fraxin), phytosterols, and fatty acids. Our Horse Chestnut is available Cut & Sifted.
⚠️ Important: Horse chestnut seeds contain aesculin, a coumarin glycoside that is toxic when raw and unprocessed. Only properly processed horse chestnut preparations should be used. Do not consume raw horse chestnut seeds.
