Description

Hydrangea Root

(Hydrangea arborescens)

Hydrangea is one of the most beloved ornamental shrubs in the world — its spectacular globe-shaped flower heads a fixture of gardens from New England to Japan — but long before it graced garden borders, the root of Hydrangea arborescens, the native North American species, was a valued botanical in the herbal traditions of several Indigenous peoples of the eastern United States. The Cherokee, Catawba, and other nations of the Appalachian region used hydrangea root in their traditional practices, and the plant was subsequently adopted into American Eclectic medicine in the 19th century, where it became one of the more widely used native botanicals of that era.

Hydrangea arborescens — commonly known as Wild Hydrangea or Smooth Hydrangea — is a deciduous shrub native to the moist woodlands and stream banks of the eastern United States, from New York south to Florida and west to Oklahoma. The root, which is the part used in herbal preparations, has a distinctive woody, slightly sweet character and contains hydrangin (a coumarin glycoside), saponins, flavonoids, resin, volatile oils, starch, and alkaloids. Our Hydrangea Root is available in both Cut & Sifted and Powder forms.
