Polygonatum spp. — Solomon’s Seal — is one of the most graceful plants of the temperate woodland understory, a rhizomatous perennial herb of the family Asparagaceae native to the forests of Europe, Asia, and North America. The name “Solomon’s Seal” refers to the distinctive circular scars on the rhizome that resemble ancient wax seals, said to resemble the seal of King Solomon. Known as Huang Jing (黄精) in traditional Chinese medicine — an important tonic herb in the classical Chinese materia medica.

Solomon’s Seal root contains steroidal saponins (polygonatin, diosgenin, gitogenin), polysaccharides, flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol, vitexin), allantoin, mucilage, starch, tannins, vitamin C, calcium, potassium, and magnesium.

How to Use

Decoction: Simmer 1–2 teaspoons in 8 oz of water for 15–20 minutes; strain. Tincture: Use in alcohol-based preparations. Herbal Blends: Combines well with shatavari and ashwagandha. Powder: Grind and encapsulate or blend into herbal formulas.
