Description
Osha Root, Whole
(Ligusticum porteri)
Few botanicals carry the mystique and reverence of Osha Root. Ligusticum porteri — known as Osha, Bear Root, or Chuchupate — is a perennial herb of the carrot family (Apiaceae) native to the high-altitude meadows, canyons, and mountain slopes of the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Madre Occidental, growing at elevations of 6,000 to 10,000 feet across Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and northern Mexico. It is one of the most sacred and celebrated plants in the traditional botanical practices of numerous Indigenous peoples of the American Southwest and Rocky Mountain region, including the Navajo, Apache, Zuni, and many Pueblo nations, where it has been used ceremonially and medicinally for centuries. The name “Bear Root” reflects a widespread Indigenous observation that bears — upon emerging from hibernation — would seek out and dig up osha root, rolling in it and consuming it. Osha has a deeply distinctive aroma: intensely earthy, celery-like, and resinous, with a warm, slightly bitter, and pungent character that is unmistakable.
Please note: Due to increasing demand and the challenges of sustainable wildcrafting at high altitude, Osha Root is now sold by the ounce. This herb is wildcrafted — harvested from its native mountain habitat — and is becoming increasingly difficult to source. We encourage mindful, intentional use of this precious botanical.
The root is rich in a complex array of phytochemicals including phthalides (Z-ligustilide — the primary aromatic compound, also found in lovage and angelica), ferulic acid, terpene lactones, saponins, phytosterols, volatile essential oils (responsible for the characteristic celery-resinous aroma), tannins, alkaloids, resin, and plant acids. Available as Whole Root.

How to Use
Decoction: Simmer 1 teaspoon of whole or broken root pieces in 8–10 oz of water for 20–30 minutes; strain. The flavor is strong, earthy, and pungent — often blended with honey or licorice root to balance. Tincture: The preferred traditional preparation — steep in high-proof alcohol for 4–6 weeks. Oxymel: Combine with raw apple cider vinegar and honey for a traditional oxymel preparation. Herbal Blends: Combines with elecampane, mullein, and thyme in traditional respiratory herbal formulas. Whole Root: Keep whole until use to preserve volatile oil content — break or grind as needed.
