Gravel Root is a stately, late-summer wildflower native to the moist woodlands, stream banks, and meadow edges of eastern North America — a towering perennial that can reach six feet or more, crowned with clusters of dusty rose-purple blooms beloved by pollinators. Known botanically as Eutrochium purpureum (formerly Eupatorium purpureum), it carries a rich legacy in North American herbal tradition, where it was widely used by Indigenous peoples of the eastern woodlands and later adopted by Eclectic physicians of the 19th century. The common name "Gravel Root" reflects its longstanding folk association with the urinary tract and kidneys. It is also widely known as Joe Pye Weed — a name rooted in legend, said to honor a Native American healer named Joe Pye who reportedly used the plant to treat typhus fever in colonial New England.
