Description
Ginger Root – Cut & Sifted & Powder
(Zingiber officinale)
Ginger is one of the world’s great spices — a warming, pungent, aromatic rhizome that has been cultivated and traded across South and Southeast Asia for over 5,000 years and is now one of the most widely used flavoring ingredients on earth. Zingiber officinale is native to maritime Southeast Asia and was among the first Asian spices to reach Europe via the ancient spice trade, appearing in Roman cookbooks and medieval European recipes alike. Today it is a cornerstone of cuisines from India and China to the Caribbean and West Africa.
The characteristic heat and aroma of ginger come from its principal compounds — gingerols in fresh ginger and shogaols in dried ginger, which form when gingerols are dehydrated and concentrate in intensity. Dried ginger is notably spicier and more pungent than fresh, making it a distinct and powerful culinary ingredient in its own right. Our Ginger Root is available in both Cut & Sifted and Powder forms.
