Description
American Ginseng Root
(Panax quinquefolium)
American Ginseng is one of North America’s most prized and historically significant botanical exports — a slow-growing perennial native to the hardwood forests of the eastern United States and Canada, from the Appalachian Mountains to the Ozarks. Panax quinquefolium — whose genus name Panax derives from the Greek for “all-healing,” the same root as “panacea” — has been harvested from American forests since the early 18th century, when French Jesuit missionaries recognized its similarity to the Chinese ginseng (Panax ginseng) and began exporting it to China, where it was immediately prized as a premium botanical.
American Ginseng differs from Asian Ginseng in its ginsenoside profile — it is considered “cooler” in TCM energetics, in contrast to the “warming” nature of Korean/Asian ginseng. Its characteristic active compounds, the ginsenosides (particularly Rb1, Rc, and Rd), are unique in their ratio compared to other ginseng species. Glenbrook Farms sits right in the heart of the world’s greatest American Ginseng growing region — Appalachian Kentucky — which is why our pricing is so competitive for this premium root. Our American Ginseng is available in both Whole Root and Powder forms.
