Key Botanicals
- Dandelion Root (Taraxacum officinale) — one of the most widespread and well-studied botanical roots in the world, containing taraxacin, taraxacerin, inulin, beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, luteolin, apigenin, caffeic acid, and chlorogenic acid; used in topical preparations in European herbal tradition
- Burdock Root (Arctium lappa) — a large-rooted biennial of the family Asteraceae native to Europe and Asia, widely naturalized in North America; contains arctiin (a lignan), inulin, mucilage, tannins, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, and polyacetylenes; a classic root in both European and Traditional Chinese botanical tradition
- Sarsaparilla Root (Smilax ornata / Smilax regelii) — a tropical vine native to Central America and the Caribbean, whose root contains saponins (including sarsasaponin, smilasaponin, and sarsaparilloside), phytosterols (beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol), flavonoids, and starch; used in traditional botanical practice across Central and South America and in 19th-century American eclectic medicine
- Chaparral (Larrea tridentata) — the resinous leaf of the creosote bush, native to the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts of North America; contains nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) — one of the most potent naturally occurring antioxidant compounds known — along with flavonoids, wax esters, and volatile oils; used topically in Indigenous Southwestern and Mexican botanical tradition
- Oregon Grape Root (Mahonia aquifolium) — a Pacific Northwest native rich in berberine — the golden alkaloid also found in goldenseal and barberry
- Neem Oil (Azadirachta indica) — cold-pressed from the seeds of the neem tree; rich in azadirachtin, nimbin, nimbidin, gedunin, and nourishing fatty acids; one of the most widely used botanicals in Ayurvedic topical tradition
- Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) — the flowers of German chamomile, rich in alpha-bisabolol, chamazulene (responsible for the characteristic blue color of chamomile essential oil), apigenin, luteolin, and quercetin; one of the most widely used soothing topical botanicals in European herbal tradition
- Cajeput Essential Oil (Melaleuca cajuputi) — a member of the Myrtaceae family related to tea tree and eucalyptus, with a fresh, camphoraceous, slightly fruity aroma; rich in 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol)
- Frankincense Essential Oil (Boswellia sacra) — one of the most prized aromatic resins in human history; contributes a warm, balsamic, resinous depth to the salve’s aroma
