Prunus africana — African Cherry, Pygeum, or Red Stinkwood — is a large, evergreen tree of the rose family (Rosaceae) native to the montane forests of sub-Saharan Africa, found at elevations of 1,000–3,000 meters across a wide range from Cameroon and Nigeria in the west to Ethiopia and Kenya in the east, and south through the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, and Madagascar to South Africa. One of the most ecologically and economically significant trees of the African highland forest, Prunus africana produces a distinctive reddish-brown bark with a characteristic bitter, slightly astringent flavor. The bark has a long history of use in the traditional botanical practices of numerous African peoples — including the Kikuyu of Kenya, the Bamileke of Cameroon, and many others — where it has been used for generations as a botanical preparation. Pygeum bark entered the European and North American herbal and supplement market in the 1960s and has since become one of the most widely studied and commercially significant African botanical extracts in the world. Due to high commercial demand, Prunus africana is now listed on CITES Appendix II as a species requiring trade regulation to prevent overexploitation.
