Description

Fo-Ti Root – Aged

(Polygonum multiflorum — He Shou Wu)

Fo-Ti is one of the most celebrated and storied roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine — and one of the most famous botanical folk tales in Chinese herbal tradition belongs to it. He Shou Wu (何首乌) translates literally as “Mr. Wu’s black hair”: according to legend, a man named Mr. Wu discovered this root, incorporated it into his daily diet, and watched his gray hair return to its original black. The name has endured for centuries, and He Shou Wu remains one of the most recognized and widely used roots in TCM to this day.

Polygonum multiflorum is a climbing vine native to central and southern China, where the large, tuberous root is harvested and traditionally processed — the “aged” or “prepared” root (zhì hé shǒu wū) has been cured with black bean broth in a traditional processing method that distinguishes it from the raw root. Our Fo-Ti is the aged/prepared root, available in both Cut and Powder forms. The root is naturally rich in stilbene glycosides, including emodin and resveratrol.
