Description
Eyebright Herb – Powder
(Euphrasia officinalis)
Eyebright is a small, delicate semi-parasitic annual herb native to the heathlands, meadows, and grassy slopes of Europe and western Asia. Euphrasia officinalis — from the Greek euphrosyne, meaning “gladness” or “good cheer” — is a charming wildflower with tiny white and purple blooms marked with yellow spots, whose appearance was said by early herbalists to resemble a bright, healthy eye. This fanciful resemblance gave rise to the common name “Eyebright” and, following the Doctrine of Signatures popular in medieval European herbalism, to centuries of traditional use.
Eyebright has been a fixture of European folk herbalism since at least the 14th century, appearing in the writings of herbalists including Hildegard of Bingen and Nicholas Culpeper. The above-ground herb is naturally rich in iridoid glycosides, flavonoids, and tannins. Our Eyebright Herb is available in Powder form.
