Description
Eleutherococcus Senticosus Root
(Eleutherococcus senticosus — Siberian Ginseng / Eleuthero)
Eleutherococcus senticosus — commonly known as Siberian Ginseng or Eleuthero — is a woody shrub native to the forests of northeastern China, Russia, Korea, and Japan. Despite sharing the “ginseng” common name, it is botanically distinct from true ginsengs (Panax species), belonging instead to the same Araliaceae family. The root and root bark have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries, where it is known as cì wǔ jiā (刺五加).
Eleuthero rose to particular prominence in the 20th century when Soviet researchers — seeking natural performance-enhancing botanicals for athletes, cosmonauts, and military personnel — conducted extensive studies on the plant. It became one of the most researched adaptogens in the world during this period and remains a cornerstone botanical in both TCM and Western herbal practice today. Its characteristic active compounds, the eleutherosides, are unique to this species. Our Eleutherococcus Senticosus Root is available in both Cut & Sifted and Powder forms.
