Yellowdock Root

(Rumex crispus)

Rumex crispus — Yellow Dock, Curly Dock, or Curled Dock — is a robust, deep-rooted perennial herb of the family Polygonaceae native to Europe and western Asia, widely naturalized throughout North America, Australia, and temperate regions worldwide, where it grows in disturbed soils, roadsides, fields, meadows, and the edges of streams and wetlands. Rumex crispus is one of the most widespread and ecologically successful naturalized plants in the world — it was introduced to North America by European colonists and has been documented in every U.S. state and Canadian province. The common name “Yellow Dock” refers to the distinctive bright yellow color of the root’s interior, caused by its high concentration of anthraquinone glycosides and tannins. The species name crispus — “curled” or “crisped” in Latin — refers to the characteristic wavy, curled margins of the leaves. Rumex crispus has a long and well-documented history of use in European, North American, and Indigenous botanical tradition — the root was used by numerous Indigenous nations including the Cherokee, Iroquois, Ojibwe, and Navajo, and it was a staple of 19th-century American eclectic medicine, listed in the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) from 1860 through 1905. The young leaves of yellow dock are edible and have been consumed as a potherb and salad green in European and North American food traditions — they have a pleasantly tart, lemony flavor owing to their oxalic acid content. The root has a bitter, astringent taste characteristic of its tannin and anthraquinone content. Our Yellowdock Root is the dried root of Rumex crispus, available in cut & sifted and powder forms.

Rumex crispus root contains a well-documented phytochemical profile including anthraquinone glycosides (primarily emodin, chrysophanol, physcion, rhein, and aloe-emodin — the same class of compounds found in rhubarb root, cascara, and senna), tannins (including catechins and condensed tannins), oxalic acid, calcium oxalate, rumicin (a naphthalene derivative unique to Rumex species), nepodin, resveratrol, quercetin, kaempferol, hyperoside, vitexin, isovitexin, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, chlorogenic acid, beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, iron (one of the highest iron concentrations of any botanical root), calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, manganese, zinc, vitamin C, and dietary fiber. Available in Cut & Sifted and Powder forms.

⚠️ Safety Note: Yellow dock root contains oxalic acid and calcium oxalate — individuals with a history of kidney stones (particularly calcium oxalate stones) or kidney disease should use with caution and consult a qualified healthcare provider before use. The anthraquinone content means yellow dock root should not be used in large amounts or for extended periods without professional guidance. Not recommended during pregnancy or nursing.

How to Use

Decoction (Tea): Simmer 1 teaspoon of cut & sifted yellow dock root in 2 cups of water for 20–30 minutes; strain and cool. The flavor is bitter and astringent — characteristic of high-tannin and anthraquinone-containing roots. Powder: Use ½–1 teaspoon of powder in decoctions or incorporate into herbal blends. Herbal Blends: A traditional ingredient in bitter root formulations — pairs well with dandelion root, burdock root, and gentian in classic European and American bitter root blends. Tincture Base: Yellow dock root is a traditional tincture ingredient; steep in food-grade alcohol per standard tincture ratios. Culinary/Historical Use: Young yellow dock leaves (not the root) have a pleasantly tart, lemony flavor from oxalic acid and have been used as a potherb and salad green in European and North American food traditions — cook briefly and discard the water to reduce oxalic acid content.

Available in Cut & Sifted and Powder (2 oz, 4 oz, 8 oz, 16 oz).
