Usnea — Old Man’s Beard, Beard Lichen, or Tree Moss — is not a plant at all, but a lichen — one of the most extraordinary and ancient organisms on Earth. How to Use

Tincture (Recommended): Usnea’s primary bioactive compounds — particularly usnic acid — have very low water solubility and are best extracted in alcohol. Pack whole usnea into a jar, cover with 80-proof vodka or grain alcohol, and macerate for 4–6 weeks, shaking daily; strain and press. Cold Infusion: For a partial extraction of the water-soluble polysaccharides, cold-infuse in water overnight; combine with an alcohol tincture for a broader spectrum extract. Herbal Blends: Traditionally combined with echinacea in herbal tincture formulas.
