Description

Sarsaparilla Root — Indian

(Hemidesmus indicus)

Hemidesmus indicus — Indian Sarsaparilla, Anantamul, or False Sarsaparilla — is a slender, twining perennial vine of the family Apocynaceae (formerly Asclepiadaceae) native to the Indian subcontinent, where it grows in dry, open forests, scrublands, and grasslands across India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Myanmar. Hemidesmus indicus is one of the most important and widely used botanicals in Ayurvedic medicine — the traditional botanical system of India — where it is known as Anantamul (Sanskrit: अनन्तमूल — “root without end” or “eternal root”), a reference to the plant’s long, creeping root system, and as Sariva, one of the primary cooling and purifying botanicals in the Ayurvedic materia medica. Despite sharing the common name “sarsaparilla” with the American and Jamaican sarsaparillas (Smilax spp.), Hemidesmus indicus is botanically distinct — a different genus, family, and phytochemical profile — though both share a characteristic vanilla-like aromatic quality that has made them interchangeable in the traditional root beer and sarsaparilla beverage trade. The root of Hemidesmus indicus has a distinctive, complex aromatic profile — sweet, vanilla-like, slightly earthy, with notes of licorice and a subtle spicy warmth — making it one of the most pleasant-tasting of all botanical roots and a prized flavoring ingredient in traditional Indian beverages, confections, and culinary preparations.

The root contains a distinctive array of phytochemicals including 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzaldehyde (the primary volatile compound responsible for the characteristic vanilla-like aroma — unique to Hemidesmus indicus and one of its most important quality markers), lupeol (a pentacyclic triterpene), lupeol acetate, beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, hemidesmine (an alkaloid), hemidesminine, resin acids, tannins, saponins (including desinine), flavonoids, coumarins, essential oils, starch, mucilage, and organic acids. Available in Cut & Sifted and Powder forms.

The flavor is sweet, vanilla-like, and pleasantly aromatic — one of the most enjoyable of all herbal root teas. Cold Infusion: Soak in cold water overnight for a milder, sweeter infusion. Root Beer & Sarsaparilla Beverages: A traditional flavoring ingredient in homemade root beer, sarsaparilla sodas, and botanical beverages — combine with sassafras, licorice root, and wintergreen for a classic root beer flavor profile. Herbal Blends: Pairs beautifully with licorice root, cinnamon, ginger, and cardamom in warming, aromatic herbal tea blends. Tincture: Use in alcohol-based tincture preparations. Powder: Encapsulate or blend into herbal formulas.
