Psyllium Seed Powder, Organic

(Plantago ovata)

Plantago ovata — Blond Psyllium, Isabgol, or Desert Indianwheat — is a small annual herb of the plantain family (Plantaginaceae) native to the Mediterranean region, North Africa, and western Asia, and now cultivated extensively in India (particularly the state of Gujarat), which produces the vast majority of the world’s psyllium supply. The plant produces slender, grass-like leaves and small spikes of flowers, each surrounded by a husk — the seed husk, or psyllium husk — that is one of the most concentrated natural sources of soluble dietary fiber known. Plantago ovata has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries under the name Isabgol (from the Persian ispaghul, meaning “horse ear,” a reference to the shape of the seed), and it has become one of the most widely used dietary fiber supplements in the world. Our Organic Psyllium Seed Powder is made from the whole seed of Plantago ovata, ground to a fine powder — providing the full spectrum of the seed’s fiber content, including both the mucilaginous husk and the inner seed.

Psyllium seed is exceptionally rich in dietary fiber — both soluble and insoluble — with the primary component being arabinoxylan (a highly branched, gel-forming polysaccharide that constitutes the primary soluble fiber of the psyllium husk), along with rhamnose, xylose, arabinose (component sugars of the arabinoxylan), mucilage (the gel-forming fraction responsible for psyllium’s characteristic water-absorbing properties), fixed oils (linoleic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid), protein, aucubin (an iridoid glycoside shared with other Plantago species), planteose (a trisaccharide), phytosterols (beta-sitosterol), and tannins. Available in Powder form. Certified Organic.

How to Use

Fiber Supplement: Mix 1 teaspoon of psyllium seed powder into 8 oz of water or juice and drink immediately — follow with an additional 8 oz of water. Important: Always take with adequate water — psyllium absorbs water rapidly and should never be taken without sufficient liquid. Smoothies: Blend into smoothies for added fiber — the powder thickens liquids quickly, so blend and consume promptly. Baking: Use as a binding agent and fiber booster in gluten-free baking — psyllium powder is a key ingredient in gluten-free bread recipes. Thickener: Use to thicken soups, sauces, and gravies as a natural, fiber-rich alternative to starch thickeners.
