Description

Peppermint Leaf

(Mentha × piperita)

Peppermint — Mentha × piperita — is one of the most beloved, widely recognized, and commercially significant herbs on earth. A natural hybrid of watermint (Mentha aquatica) and spearmint (Mentha spicata), peppermint does not occur in the wild but was first documented in England in the late 17th century, where it was recognized as a distinct and superior mint variety and quickly became one of the most cultivated herbs in Europe. Today, peppermint is grown commercially across the world — with the Willamette Valley of Oregon and the Columbia Basin of Washington producing some of the finest peppermint in existence — and its essential oil is one of the most widely used flavoring and aromatic compounds in the food, beverage, confectionery, pharmaceutical, and personal care industries. The dried leaf, with its intensely refreshing, cool, and clean minty character, is one of the most popular herbal teas in the world — a timeless classic that needs no introduction.

Peppermint leaf is exceptionally rich in volatile essential oils and phytochemicals including menthol (the primary monoterpene alcohol, responsible for the characteristic cooling sensation — typically 35–55% of the essential oil), menthone (20–30%), menthyl acetate, menthofuran, isomenthone, neomenthol, pulegone (in trace amounts), cineole (eucalyptol), limonene, beta-pinene, rosmarinic acid (a potent polyphenolic antioxidant), flavonoids (luteolin, apigenin, hesperidin, eriocitrin), tannins, vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron. Available in Cut & Sifted and Powder forms.
