Description
Partridge Berry Vine
(Mitchella repens)
Mitchella repens — known as Partridge Berry, Squaw Vine, Running Box, or Twinberry — is a delicate, low-growing evergreen vine of the coffee family (Rubiaceae) native to the woodlands and forest floors of eastern North America, from Canada south through the Appalachians and into the Gulf states. One of the most charming wildflowers of the eastern American forest, it produces pairs of small white tubular flowers — always in pairs, fused at the base — followed by bright scarlet berries that persist through winter and are a beloved food source for partridges, wild turkeys, and other woodland birds, giving the plant its most familiar common name. Mitchella repens holds a significant and well-documented place in the traditional botanical practices of numerous Indigenous peoples of eastern North America, including the Cherokee, Ojibwe, Iroquois, and many other nations, where it was one of the most widely used and respected women’s herbs in the native botanical tradition. It is also known by the name Squaw Vine, reflecting this traditional association.
