Description

Papaya Leaf

(Carica papaya)

The papaya — Carica papaya — is one of the most celebrated tropical fruits on earth, native to Central America and southern Mexico and now cultivated throughout the tropics and subtropics of the Americas, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. A fast-growing, tree-like herbaceous plant of the family Caricaceae, the papaya has been a cornerstone of tropical food culture and traditional botanical practice for centuries. While the fruit is universally beloved, the large, deeply lobed leaves of Carica papaya have their own distinguished place in the traditional herbal practices of Central America, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and West Africa — where they have been used as both a food and a botanical preparation for generations. The leaves are harvested, dried, and prepared as cut & sifted herb or powder, offering a concentrated source of the plant’s characteristic phytochemicals.

The leaf is rich in a broad array of phytochemicals and nutrients including papain (a proteolytic enzyme unique to the papaya plant), chymopapain, carpaine (a unique alkaloid found almost exclusively in papaya), pseudocarpaine, flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol, myricetin), phenolic acids (caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid), vitamin C, vitamin A (as beta-carotene), vitamin E, vitamin K, B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, folate), calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, tannins, and saponins. Available in Cut & Sifted and Powder forms.
