Description
Oregano, Fancy Grade
(Origanum vulgare)
Oregano is one of the defining flavors of Mediterranean cuisine — a herb so deeply embedded in the culinary traditions of Italy, Greece, Turkey, and the Middle East that it is difficult to imagine those kitchens without it. Origanum vulgare — from the Greek oros (mountain) and ganos (joy), meaning “joy of the mountain” — is a perennial herb of the mint family (Lamiaceae) native to the rocky hillsides and sun-drenched slopes of the Mediterranean basin and western Asia. Our Fancy Grade oregano represents the highest tier of dried oregano quality — selected for superior leaf-to-stem ratio, vibrant color, and exceptional aromatic potency. Hand-picked and carefully dried to preserve maximum essential oil content, this is oregano at its most expressive: robust, warm, slightly peppery, and unmistakably Mediterranean.
Oregano is exceptionally rich in essential oils and phytochemicals including carvacrol (the primary phenolic compound responsible for oregano’s characteristic pungency), thymol, p-cymene, gamma-terpinene, linalool, borneol, rosmarinic acid (a potent polyphenolic antioxidant), ursolic acid, oleanolic acid, flavonoids (luteolin, apigenin, quercetin), tannins, vitamin K, vitamin E, iron, calcium, and manganese. Available in Cut & Sifted and Powder forms.
