Milk Thistle Seed

(Silybum marianum)
Sourced from the USA and Europe

Milk thistle is one of the most extensively documented and widely studied herbs in Western botanical medicine — a striking, spiny thistle of the daisy family (Asteraceae) native to the Mediterranean basin and southwestern Europe, now naturalized across North America, South America, Australia, and much of the world. Silybum marianum is immediately recognizable by its large, glossy, dark green leaves dramatically veined and marbled with white — a distinctive marking that, according to Christian legend, was caused by a drop of the Virgin Mary’s milk falling onto the plant as she nursed the infant Jesus. This legend gave the plant its common name — Milk Thistle — and its species name marianum (of Mary), and made it a beloved plant in medieval European monastery gardens, where it was grown both as a medicinal herb and as a symbol of the Madonna.

The use of milk thistle as a medicinal herb dates back over 2,000 years. The Greek physician Dioscorides mentioned it in his De Materia Medica (c. 50–70 CE). The Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder described its use in his Naturalis Historia (77 CE). Through the medieval period it was a staple of European herbal medicine, and by the 19th century German physicians had begun systematic investigation of its properties. Today, milk thistle seed extract is one of the most commercially significant botanical supplements in the world, and silymarin — the complex of flavonolignans extracted from the seed — is among the most extensively researched plant compounds in pharmacological literature, with thousands of published studies.

The seeds contain a remarkable array of phytochemicals, most notably the silymarin complex — a group of flavonolignans including silybin (also called silibinin — the primary active component, comprising approximately 50–70% of silymarin), silydianin, silychristin, isosilybin A and B, dehydrosilybin, and isosilychristin. The seeds also contain flavonoids (quercetin, taxifolin, kaempferol), fatty acids (linoleic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid — the seed oil is approximately 60% linoleic acid), tocopherols (vitamin E), sterols (beta-sitosterol, campesterol), betaine, trimethylglycine, and protein (approximately 25–30% by weight). Available in Whole Seed and Powder forms, sourced from the USA and Europe.

How to Use

Powder: Add ½–1 teaspoon of milk thistle powder to smoothies, yogurt, oatmeal, or juice — the flavor is mild and slightly nutty. Whole Seeds: Grind in a coffee or spice grinder before use to improve bioavailability — the whole seed hull is difficult to digest. Add ground seeds to smoothies, salads, soups, and grain dishes. Tea / Decoction: Simmer 1 teaspoon of lightly crushed seeds in 2 cups of water for 20 minutes; strain. Capsules: Fill empty capsules with powder for a convenient supplement form. Culinary: Ground milk thistle seed has a mild, slightly bitter, nutty flavor — use in granola, energy bars, and baked goods. Tincture: Use in alcohol-based tincture preparations.

Available in Whole Seed and Powder (4 oz, 8 oz, 16 oz). Sourced from the USA and Europe.
