Description

Hawthorn Flowers and Leaf

(Crataegus monogyna / Crataegus laevigata)

Hawthorn is one of the most beloved and deeply studied botanicals in European herbal tradition — a thorny shrub of the rose family (Rosaceae) whose berries, leaves, and flowers have each been valued in their own right for centuries. While the deep red haws (berries) are the most recognized part of the plant, the flowers and leaves of Crataegus have their own distinguished place in European phytomedicine and are listed alongside the berries in the German Commission E monographs as an approved botanical.

The flowers appear in May — giving hawthorn its folk names “May tree” and “May blossom” — in dense clusters of delicate white or pale pink blooms with a distinctive sweet, slightly almond-like fragrance. The leaves are small, lobed, and bright green. Both the flowers and leaves share the same rich phytochemical profile as the berries, containing oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), flavonoids (vitexin, vitexin-2’’-rhamnoside, quercetin, hyperoside), triterpene acids, and tannins — with the flowers and leaves often considered particularly rich in the vitexin glycosides that have attracted the most research interest. Our Hawthorn Flowers and Leaf is available Cut & Sifted.
