Description

Gotu Kola

(Centella asiatica)

Gotu Kola is one of the most revered and widely used herbs in the traditional medicine systems of Asia — a small, creeping, fan-leaved plant native to the wetlands, riverbanks, and tropical regions of South and Southeast Asia, from India and Sri Lanka to Indonesia, China, and Madagascar. Centella asiatica holds a place of extraordinary esteem in Ayurveda, where it is known as Mandukparni (“frog leaf”) and classified as a medhya rasayana — a category of herbs traditionally considered to nourish and support the mind. In Sri Lanka, it is eaten as a daily green vegetable (gotu kola sambol) and is a staple of traditional cuisine.

One of the most charming legends surrounding Gotu Kola involves elephants — animals renowned for their exceptional longevity and memory — who were observed grazing on the plant in the wild, leading to the traditional belief that it contributed to their remarkable qualities. The herb’s principal active compounds are the triterpenoid saponins — asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid, and madecassic acid — collectively known as centelloids, which have been the subject of extensive modern research. Gotu Kola is listed in the pharmacopoeias of India, China, and several European countries. Our Gotu Kola is available in both Cut & Sifted and Powder forms.
