Description
Goldenseal Leaf – Cut & Sifted
(Hydrastis canadensis)
Goldenseal is one of North America’s most celebrated and ecologically significant native botanicals — a small woodland perennial native to the rich, moist hardwood forests of the eastern United States and Canada, from Vermont and the Great Lakes region south through the Appalachians. Hydrastis canadensis was one of the most important medicinal plants used by numerous Indigenous peoples of eastern North America, including the Cherokee, Iroquois, and other nations, who used both the root and leaf extensively. It was subsequently adopted enthusiastically by 19th-century American Eclectic physicians and became one of the most widely sold botanical medicines in the United States by the late 1800s.
Goldenseal’s characteristic bright yellow color comes from its principal alkaloids — berberine, hydrastine, and canadine — which are present in both the root and leaf, though in higher concentrations in the root. Berberine in particular has become one of the most extensively researched plant alkaloids in modern botanical science. Due to decades of overharvesting combined with habitat loss, wild goldenseal is now a protected species listed on CITES Appendix II, making sustainably sourced goldenseal an important consideration. Our Goldenseal Leaf is available Cut & Sifted.
