Description

Goldenrod Herb – Cut & Sifted

(Solidago virgaurea)

Goldenrod is one of North America’s and Europe’s most recognizable and beloved wildflowers — the tall, arching plumes of brilliant golden-yellow flowers that light up meadows, roadsides, and forest edges from late summer through autumn. Solidago virgaurea — European Goldenrod — is native to Europe and western Asia and has been used in European herbal tradition for centuries, while its North American relatives (Solidago canadensis and others) were extensively used by numerous Indigenous peoples across the continent.

Despite its reputation as a hay fever culprit, goldenrod is actually largely innocent — its heavy, sticky pollen is insect-carried rather than wind-carried, and the real seasonal allergy offender is ragweed (Ambrosia spp.), which blooms at the same time but is far less showy. Goldenrod is in fact an important late-season nectar source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators preparing for winter. The herb contains a rich array of active constituents including cinnamates, phenolic glucosides, saponins, inulin, tannins, hydroxybenzoates, and acetylenes. It has a long history of use in European phytotherapy and is listed in the German Commission E monographs. Our Goldenrod Herb is available Cut & Sifted.
