Description

Ginkgo Biloba Leaf

(Ginkgo biloba)

Ginkgo is one of the most extraordinary plants on earth — a true living fossil. Ginkgo biloba is the sole surviving species of the division Ginkgophyta, a group of plants that flourished alongside the dinosaurs over 200 million years ago. Individual ginkgo trees can live for over 1,000 years, and the species survived the last ice age in refugia in China, where it has been cultivated in temple gardens for centuries. When atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima in 1945, six ginkgo trees within a mile of the blast survived and were among the first living things to re-sprout — they still stand today.

The distinctive fan-shaped, bilobed leaves of Ginkgo biloba — whose species name literally means “two-lobed” — are rich in flavonoid glycosides (including quercetin and kaempferol) and terpene lactones (ginkgolides and bilobalide), the characteristic active compounds of this unique species. Ginkgo leaf has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries and became one of the most extensively researched botanical supplements in the world during the late 20th century. Our Ginkgo Biloba Leaf is available in both Cut & Sifted and Powder forms.
