Description
Feverfew Herb
(Tanacetum parthenium)
Feverfew is a cheerful, daisy-like perennial herb native to the Balkan Peninsula and western Asia, now naturalized across Europe and North America where it grows freely in gardens, roadsides, and disturbed ground. Tanacetum parthenium — from the Greek parthenos, meaning “virgin,” reflecting its historical association with women’s health in ancient Greek medicine — produces a profusion of small white flowers with yellow centers that closely resemble chamomile, to which it is related as a member of the Asteraceae family.
Feverfew has been a fixture of European folk herbalism for over 2,000 years, appearing in the writings of the ancient Greek physician Dioscorides and remaining in continuous use through the medieval period, when it earned the colorful nickname “medieval aspirin” for its prominent place in the herbal medicine chest of the era. The above-ground herb is naturally rich in sesquiterpene lactones, particularly parthenolide — the characteristic active compound unique to this species. Our Feverfew Herb is available in Powder form, with Cut & Sifted available when in stock.
