Description
Elecampane Root
(Inula helenium)
Elecampane is a striking, tall perennial herb native to central Asia and southeastern Europe, now naturalized across much of Europe and North America. Inula helenium — named, according to legend, after Helen of Troy, whose tears were said to have given rise to the plant — produces bold, sunflower-like yellow blooms atop stems that can reach six feet in height, making it as ornamental as it is botanically significant.
The root of elecampane has been used in European and Asian herbal traditions for over 2,000 years, appearing in the writings of Hippocrates, Pliny the Elder, and Dioscorides. It is naturally rich in inulin — a prebiotic fiber that gives the root its characteristic slightly sweet, earthy, and camphor-like aroma — as well as sesquiterpene lactones and essential oils. Our Elecampane Root is available in both Cut & Sifted and Powder forms.
