Long before incense was traded along the Silk Road, copal was being burned in Aztec and Mayan temples as an offering to the gods — its fragrant, rising smoke believed to carry prayers and intentions to the heavens. The word “copal” itself derives from the Nahuatl word copalli, meaning “incense.”
