The British Herbal Pharmacopoeia recognizes Devils claw as possessing, analgesic, sedative and diuretic properties.

The main active ingredients in Devil's claw are Harpogoside and Beta sitosterol, which have anti-inflammatory properties and help support  joint, ligament and tendon problems. Devil's claw is reported to help with joint pain while improving vitality in the joints.

Devils claw is very bitter which is an indication that it help liver function.
